Maximapark, Utrecht
This lookout tower, known as The Observatory in Máximapark, was designed by the Amsterdam-based artist Lucas Lenglet. In 2009, a competition was launched to commission a landmark artwork for the then still newly developing neighborhood. Three designs were submitted, and Lenglet’s proposal emerged as the winning entry. By 2013, the tower had been completed and had become a striking feature of the park landscape.
The Park Pergola in Máximapark is an impressive architectural and ecological landmark made up of elevated honeycomb structures supported by durable concrete columns. Stretching 900 meters long and rising 6 meters high, it forms a striking entrance to the park’s green inner courtyard, known as the Binnenhof. Designed in collaboration with ecological experts, the pergola provides space for climbing plants as well as nesting and sheltering areas for birds, bats, and insects. By combining nature, architecture, and biodiversity, the structure strengthens ecological connections throughout the park while creating an engaging and accessible landscape for visitors.
The Lelievijver Bridge is one of the highlights of Máximapark. Spanning the rectangular Lily Pond in the park’s Inner Garden, the elegant elevated bridge is distinguished by its decorative railing featuring a daisy motif. Beside the pond lies a picnic meadow, while across the water visitors can reach Taxodium Island, a leafy and flower-rich woodland area with natural inlets that provide a peaceful habitat for birds, dragonflies, newts, and frogs. Similar iron bridges bearing the same daisy pattern can be found throughout the park.
